What Is Natural Horsemanship and How to Start
Natural horsemanship is an approach to working with horses that relies on the horse's natural way of communicating, not on force and fear. Instead of making the horse submit, we learn to speak its language: body language, energy, pressure and release.
The idea is not new, but it was popularised through the work of trainers like Tom and Bill Dorrance, Ray Hunt and later Pat Parelli. What they all share is this: the horse is a prey animal that evaluates everything through safety. Once we understand that, everything else becomes easier.
What does natural horsemanship mean in practice? First, we never punish the horse out of anger. Second, every exercise has a clear beginning, signal and release of pressure. Third, progress is measured in small steps — the horse tells us how fast we can go.
The biggest mistake I see is people treating natural horsemanship as a set of tricks: circling, joining up, stick exercises. Tricks without understanding do not work. The horse must understand why it is doing something, and that comes from consistent communication.
How do you start? Begin on the ground with simple exercises: leading, stopping, yielding the hindquarters and forequarters. Short sessions of ten to fifteen minutes, every day or every other day, achieve more than one long session a week.
It is also important to understand that natural horsemanship is not against riding or against classical dressage. On the contrary — good groundwork makes everything under saddle easier and safer.
The K3P method I teach is built exactly on these principles: communication, trust, respect, responsiveness. Every module starts from how the horse thinks, not from what we want it to do.
If you want to learn these principles in a structured way, take a look at the K3P modules with video guidance. And if you have a question about your horse, the WhisperAI assistant answers in Croatian, English and German — your first three questions are free.
