How to Gain Your Horse's Trust

Trust is the second pillar of the K3P method and nothing else stands without it. A horse trusts you when he concludes that you are predictable, that you never ask for more than he can give, and that your presence brings calm rather than tension.

Predictability comes first. The same start to every session, the same tone, the same order. Horses dislike surprises because they read them as danger. A boring, consistent human is a safe human.

Second comes release. A horse does not remember the pressure, he remembers the moment it disappeared. Release the instant he tries and you teach him that trying is safe. Keep holding after he has answered and you teach him that trying is pointless.

Third is the right to say no. A horse who is allowed to say that something is too much, and is heard, agrees faster next time. A horse who is always pushed past the line becomes either dull or explosive.

Fourth is time without demands. Stand with your horse in the stable or the field and ask for nothing. Breathe. It looks like wasted time and it is the fastest road to trust.

Hand feeding is not trust, it is habit. A horse who comes to you for a carrot has not handed you his safety, he has learned where the vending machine is.

You will know you have trust when, in a moment of fear, your horse turns towards you instead of running away. That is the only real test.
