Horse riding for beginners: balance first, then cues

The most common beginner mistake in horse riding is haste: canter before balance, jumps before a stable seat. The horse feels all of it as noise — too much movement, too many hands, too little meaning.

The seat is the primary channel

Before the horse learns cues, you learn to sit without holding. Ten minutes of walking without reins, hands on your thighs, teaches more than an hour of instruction. When your body quietly follows the movement, the horse settles underneath you.

Less is more

Halve every cue, then halve it again. A relaxed horse reacts to a weight shift of a few centimetres. A tense horse does not react even to being squeezed by both legs.

Riding is a conversation. Whoever shouts does not know how to talk.
