Mistake one: sessions that are too long. Horses learn in short bursts. Fifteen minutes of focused work is worth more than an hour of repetition. Finish while the horse is still motivated.

Mistake two: inconsistency. Today you ask for one thing, tomorrow another, the day after nothing. Horses learn through consistency — the same signal, the same meaning, every time. Without that there is no progress.

Mistake three: releasing pressure too late. Horses learn from the release, not the pressure. If you release a second too late, the horse does not connect the reward with the right answer. Train your own timing.

Mistake four: skipping the basics. Everyone wants to do the fancy work right away, while the basics — leading, standing still, yielding body parts — stay full of holes. Every problem under saddle has its root on the ground.

Mistake five: working out of frustration. The horse does not understand anger; it only understands safe and unsafe. When you feel frustration, end the session on something simple and continue tomorrow.

Mistake six: ignoring the horse's body. Behaviour that looks like stubbornness is often pain or discomfort. Before you increase your demands, check the teeth, back, saddle and hooves.
