Horse transport: preparing for safe trailer loading and travel
Transport is stressful for a horse that isn't prepared. A trailer is narrow, dark and moving — everything a flight animal naturally avoids. That's why preparation happens in advance, not on the day of travel.
Start with groundwork. The horse should follow the handler, stop and move off on cue and yield to light pressure on the lead rope. If it can't do that in the open, it won't do it at the ramp.
Practise loading without hurry. The reward is rest: when the horse puts a foot on the ramp, let it stand and breathe. Repeat over several days until loading becomes boring.
Equipment: travel boots, a headcollar with a quick-release lead, hay in the trailer and a checked ramp and floor. Drive smoothly — slowly into bends, no sudden braking.
The most common mistake is pushing and pulling at the last minute. The horse learns that the trailer is a place of conflict. Read more in the article on a horse that won't load, or ask WhisperAI for an exercise plan.
