Horse behavior: what your horse is really telling you

A horse never does anything without a reason. When a horse bites, it is because earlier, subtler communication was ignored. When it avoids being caught, being near a human predicts something unpleasant. Horse behavior is always the last link of a long chain.

Read the early signals

Before the bite comes the turned head, the lifted lip, the pinned ear. Before the kick comes the braced hindquarter and the warning tail. If you learn to read these early signals, you will rarely meet the late ones.

Three questions before every correction

Is the horse in pain? Does it understand what I am asking? Is my signal consistent? Only when all three answers are clean does a correction make sense — and then it is almost always unnecessary.

Changing behavior does not start with more control, but with better communication. That is the heart of the K3P method.
