Riding school near Zagreb: a beginner's guide before your first lesson

A riding school is more than a place where you sit on a horse. A good school teaches you how to behave around horses, how to read them and how to stay safe. That is why choosing the right school matters more than the price per lesson.

When choosing a riding school in or near Zagreb, look at three things: calm, well-trained horses, an experienced trainer and small groups. A beginner on a nervous horse or in a crowded group learns fear, not riding.

The first lesson always starts on the ground. You meet the horse, learn how to approach, lead and groom it. Only when you feel safe do you mount and take your first steps at walk, guided by the trainer.

The Ride with Tom riding school works at Black Horse Ranch in Pušća near Zaprešić, about twenty minutes from Zagreb. A 10-hour package costs €350 and takes you from your first contact with a horse to riding independently at walk and trot.
