Fear of horses: how to build trust safely before riding

Fear of horses is normal. A horse is a large, powerful animal, and many people have had a bad experience or have never been close to one. The good news is that fear can be turned into trust.

The first step is understanding. A horse is prey, not a predator — its first reaction to the unknown is flight, not attack. Once you learn to read the ears, tail and body posture, the horse becomes predictable, and predictability reduces fear.

The second step is groundwork. Before the saddle, spend time with the horse: grooming, leading, standing next to it. This builds a sense of control and teaches the horse that you are calm and safe.

The third step is small steps. Don't ask too much of yourself at once. Each time you feel comfortable, add a little: sit in the saddle while someone holds the horse, then a few steps at walk, then a short lap.

Horses sense our tension, so breathing and slowing down matter. At Black Horse Ranch we work with calm, trained horses and adapt the pace to each person — no rush and no pressure.
